Client Case Study: Penthouse Suite Project

Vancouver Gas Fireplaces (VGF) continues to rise to the challenge when conceptualizing and producing fireplace designs that utilize a client's original vision. We try to deliver overall effects inconceivable to other fireplace consultants/wholesalers. Outlined below is a project case study that started out as a discussion between VGF and a potential client and later developed into an incredible success story:

An owner of a Vancouver penthouse wanted to have a fireplace built inside a form that would occupy a large open space hosting both the living room and dining room. They also wanted to have their TV installed into this same unit, complete with additional areas for displaying various objects. What they didn't want was an over-sized installation that would infringe on the whole room's sense of space and obstruct the suite's spectacular view.

It was ascertained from the client that while some heat was desired from the fireplace, the aesthetic qualities were of primary importance. Because of this, a peninsula-style fireplace was suggested as it would allow the flames to be viewed from three sides and could be situated within the end portion of the structure, requiring less of a surround treatment.

A peninsula model by Lennox was chosen for its superior fit and finish. This model allowed for the option of radiant solid panels instead of louvers, all in black to provide very clean lines. The radiant panels decreased the amount of circulated heat, which in this case was the desired effect. All too often, clients are disappointed with the high levels of heat given off by many gas fireplaces, restricting the amount of usable time. The Lennox unit also comes with one of the more attractive log sets on the market for this type of fireplace.

As it turns out, a basic builder-quality fireplace was previously built into the exterior wall and was since removed; the affected area replaced by glass panels. A hole was thus set into one of these panels for the venting of the new fireplace. With the exception of the adjustments to the glass (which was coordinated by us) all the gas work, framing, drywall, and finishing was executed by our own forces, allowing for quick completion and timely adjustments to any variations required.

Once all the technical problems were dealt with and the choice of fireplace was approved, we designed the final wall enclosure shape to provide a niche for the TV and other ornamental objects. Through the curved shape, the rooms were now delineated from each other but not blocked off, maintaining the sense of space and the stunning Vancouver skyline view.

This project is a successful example of our ability to design, manage, and implement all aspects of the job, allowing for a client's ideas to be realized without compromise.
