When Vancouver Gas Fireplaces was approached about this particular custom job, we were skeptical about the chances of this project being completed.
Designed for a hotel lobby, this fire feature was to be 15 feet long by approximately two feet deep, open on all four sides, with a stone base and stylized panels above. In the end the client’s resolve and commitment ensured the project was done as conceptualized.
The first discussion with the designers revolved around having a completely open fireplace, its ability to vent, and safety issues. After some discussion it was resolved that the fireplace be glassed in using a double-layered frameless design.
The designers had envisioned a linear style flame pattern. To facilitate this we designed two rows of three burners lined up in a seamless fashion.
The vent hood was offset above the opening, behind the finishes because of an inset feature central to the design. The venting ran approximately 20 feet up into the ceiling and then approximately 70 feet to a side wall power vent system. Make-up air (for primary and secondary combustion, dilution air, and cooling air to run between the glass layers) was powered into the base of the unit from an exterior location approximately 80 feet away.
Vancouver Gas Fireplaces fabricated the custom burners and vent collection hood, assembled the ignition systems, interlocking equipment, power venting and power intake systems. The complete system was tested, crated and shipped to the site some 4,000 kilometers away. The fire feature was installed into the site-built enclosure under the direction of the general contractor using the specifications and schematics provided by Vancouver Gas Fireplaces.
The high quality fit and finish of the construction provided the hotel lobby with a striking display featuring the marriage of flame and attractive textured finishing materials.
