Twelve Critical Steps
- Assess the site for its ability to be vented. Options include power venting through the roof or side wall, installing a natural vent through the roof etc.
- Assess the firebox. Can a complete firebox be constructed on site or is a custom fabrication required?
- Assess the burner setup. Will you be using an off-the- shelf or customized unit?
- Design the control systems. Options include electronic ignition, interlocking controls etc.
- Assess glass fronts and finishing specifications.
- Identify the approval process and custom equipment installation.
- Identify who is responsible for the installation.
- Develop a budget to cover the above items.
- Upon approval of the project, submit schematics and written specifications to the client and approval authorities.
- Upon approval of specifications, proceed with the fabrication and assembly of components.
- When installing the fireplace, factor in time for fine adjustments, often required with custom setups.
- Obtain final site approval from inspection authorities.
Considerations for Custom Fireplaces
- How and where is the fireplace to be vented?
- What materials will surround the fireplace (i.e. the finish and behind the wall)?
- Is there an accessible supply of gas and combustion air available?
- Should there be some form of safety barrier?
- What type of visual effect do you want from the burner (i.e. traditional with logs, sand bed placed objects or just flame)?
- What type of special effect do you want the firebox to convey?
- Does the budget allow for a custom setup, or is a hybrid of stock equipment more realistic?
